I considered naming the business Juliet’s, after my grandmother who encouraged my love of baking, but after much thought, I decided to go with Layer. Why? Well, obviously for its relationship to the cakes I love to bake, but also because my life seemed to be made up of many layers that ultimately stacked up to become this wonderful place in which I find myself.
I discovered my passion for baking at a really young age. My grandmother was an extraordinary baker, and I can remember lingering over the kitchen table watching her stretch strudel dough and assemble her amazing apple pies. Recognizing my interest, my grandmother taught me everything she knew and shared her secrets with me.
I left my job as a Creative Director after spending 12 years in corporate retail and asked myself, “What are you going to do with the rest of your life?” and the answer came quickly and clearly: “I’m going to bake.” I like to think that my grandmother has been guiding me all along, encouraging me to follow my passion, keep her spirit alive, and end up in the place I was always meant to be.
